No Matter What

What if the greatest miracle...

turned out to be the toughest moment of your life?

We’ve seen it again, and again. The overwhelming, indescribable love when parents hold their babies for the first time. And the shattering fear in their eyes when something goes wrong.

Every year, St. Michael’s Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) cares for roughly 600 sick, fragile babies. Many are born right here at our hospital. Some are transferred to us from centres across Ontario.

That’s because we are home to globally renowned experts in the highly specialized fields of hypertension and diabetes, cystic fibrosis, HIV, and maternal and neonatal substance abuse withdrawal. Mothers in our care suffer a range of medical conditions, such as trauma, bleeding diseases, multiple sclerosis, cancer in pregnancy, and kidney and cardiovascular failure.

But giving healthy newborns the best start possible and bringing vulnerable babies back from the edge requires more space and better facilities.

No Matter What: The Campaign for NICU and Maternal care

We’ve launched a $10 million campaign to build a state-of-the-art NICU, maternity space with obstetrics & gynecology, and a recovery unit – all on a single floor.

That means moms won’t be separated from their babies if either of them needs special care. And it means that if anything goes wrong during a normal delivery, moms and babies can be treated right where they are by world-class experts.

“We’re not just creating a nice space. We are fundamentally changing the way babies are cared for,” says Dr. Doug Campbell, director of St. Michael’s Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. “This is about providing the right care, in the right space, at the right time. Everyone will benefit, including our most disadvantaged patients.”
